Caging in Flower | What’s Going on in Dave’s Grow?

SCROG Vs Caging

Hello and welcome to another episode of What’s Going on in Dave’s Grow?

Uh oh, top-heavy trouble! Your plants are bursting with big colas, but those top-heavy plants may be threatening a tumble. Don’t worry, fellow growers, there’s a solution! In this episode of “What’s Going on in Dave’s Grow,” I’ll demonstrate a simple yet effective technique called “Caging” that will give your plants the support they need to flourish until harvest. Tune in and say goodbye to droopy disasters!

Help! My Plants Ran Out of Space!

It’s time for a real-talk grow update! Remember those beautiful Tai Chi sativas I was so excited about? Well, turns out their enthusiasm for life might be a tad… overwhelming for my humble tent 1. A misplaced timer led to an extra two weeks of vegging, and now I’m facing a space crunch. This one’s completely on me. But hey, mistakes happen, and that’s what learning is all about!

I felt like it’s still a little early in the process, so I went in a removed the tops of these 3 plants (which shaved off about 3 inches of my canopy). The only real creative solution I have left is to raiAbove the canopyse the light up. I ditched the ratchet hangers and secured the light directly to the top support pole. This gave me about 4 more inches.

Stay tuned as I will be checking in on the growth of these tall girls in the coming weeks. The good news is, that Electrivo light runs cool and is meant to be a few inches above the canopy. We will see how it turns out.

Caging vs. SCROG: Two Paths to Plant Support

Both caging and SCROG (Screen of Green) are popular methods for supporting plants in your grow, but each has its own strengths and weaknesses. Deciding which one is right for you depends on your specific needs and priorities.

SCROG: The Structured Approach

SCROG involves a trellis secured to the grow tent, creating a flat screen through which your plants grow. This method offers:

  • Excellent support and yield: By encouraging even growth across the canopy, SCROG can maximize yields.
  • Light optimization: The flat surface allows for even light distribution, leading to better growth.

However, there are downsides:

  • Limited mobility: Once plants grow into the screen, they’re difficult to move, restricting maintenance and access.
  • Setup complexity: Setting up and maintaining the screen requires more effort than caging. SCROG

Caging: Freedom and Flexibility

Caging, inspired by the Three-A Light method by Joshua Haupt, involves surrounding your plants with a cage similar to a tomato cage. This method offers:

  • Easy access and mobility: Plants remain accessible for maintenance and inspection, and can be easily removed from the tent.
  • Simple setup: Requires minimal additional equipment and is easy to implement.

However, there are potential drawbacks:

  • Yield potential: Caging typically doesn’t promote the even canopy growth that SCROG can, potentially impacting yields.
  • Support limitations: Complex, heavy plants might require additional support within the cage.

Choosing the Right Method:

Ultimately, the best choice depends on your priorities:

  • For maximizing yield and prioritizing even growth, SCROG might be ideal.
  • If flexibility, easy maintenance, and mobility are key, caging is the better choice.

Consider your plant type, space limitations, and desired level of control when making your decision. Remember, experimenting and finding what works best for you is part of the growing journey!

Harvest Wrap-Up & Exciting News!

Hey everyone, buckle up for the finish line! As this harvest cycle draws to a close, I’m buzzing with anticipation to see how everything unfolds.

Remember I mentioned some changes coming with Success Nutrients in the last video? Well, here’s the inside scoop: I used to work at Success Nutrients a few years back, and even after leaving, I blieb a loyal fan of their products. They simply work wonders!
